Betula pendula Laciniata, also called Cutleaf Weeping Birch, is a slender, graceful tree distinguished by its deeply cut leaves and gracefully drooping branches. Its silvery white bark cracks at the base of the boot as it ages and this base takes on a darker colour, contrasting with its brownish-red twigs.
The Cutleaf Weeping Birch has deciduous foliage which buds early. Its leaves are triangular, strongly incised and irregularly toothed. They take on a beautiful yellow colour in the fall, offering a colourful spectacle. Its flowering takes place in April, in the form of male and female catkins on the same tree, hanging for the male flowers and erect for the female flowers. Fruiting is done in a samara with a membranous wing.
The Cutleaf Weeping Birch is a slender, fast-growing tree with a spreading habit that can reach 12 to 15 m in height and 6 to 8 m in spread. It is hardy down to -35°C
The Betula pendula Laciniata is planted in a drained to light, cool and neutral soil. It does not tolerate calcareous soils well, but resists drought well. It prefers a sunny or semi-shaded position. It is ideal for Japanese-style gardens, shrub beds or the edges of water features, planted alone, in groups or in alignment. It should be planted, preferably in the fall or spring, by mixing compost or potting soil with the soil. It is necessary to water regularly the first year and to mulch the foot to preserve the freshness of the ground. It requires little maintenance, apart from light pruning at the end of winter to eliminate dead wood or troublesome branches.
