Description
The luxuriant and singular foliage of Castanea sativa Aspleniifolia, or Sweet chestnut Aspleniifolia, makes this deciduous tree a very popular plant for its decorative aspect. Its leaves are long (10 to 18 cm) and narrow, linear to oblong. They are dark green and shiny, with mottling of light green and yellow. They are also very cut and toothed, which gives them an irregular and charming appearance. When young, the leaves of Castanea sativa Aspleniifolia have a downy underside.
The flowers of Sweet chestnut Aspleniifolia appear from June to July. They are cream to pale yellow, and gather in long clusters of 20 cm on the branches. They are not very flashy individually, but they form a beautiful whole that catches the eye. They also give off a pleasant and sweet fragrance, which attracts bees and butterflies.
The flowers then give fruits which ripen between the end of September and October. These are prickly balls that contain 2 or 3 chestnuts. These fruits are edible and nutritious, and can be eaten in different ways: raw, cooked, roasted, mashed or as a side dish. They also keep very well.
Castanea sativa Aspleniifolia can reach 15 to 20 m high and 10 to 15 m wide in adulthood. It resists cold down to -23°C. It is a vigorous and not very difficult tree, which likes the sun and deep, loose and slightly acid soils.
Whether singly or in clumps, the Sweet chestnut Aspleniifolia will not fail to charm you with its original silhouette during your walks.
