Description
Betula Pendula Purpurea is a striking, highly decorative ornamental tree, distinguished by its glossy purple foliage, slender silhouette and drooping branches. Its branches are also purple. Its leaves are triangular, pointed and toothed, their colour purple in spring, turns bronze in summer and reddish brown in autumn. They contrast with the smooth white bark of the boot, which cracks at the base and reveals shades of brown and black. It can reach 8 to 10 meters in height and 3 to 5 meters in spread. It is very hardy and withstands temperatures down to -30°C.
To grow Betula Pendula Purpurea in the garden, choose a sunny or semi-shaded location. It prefers cool, humus-rich and well-drained soil, but adapts to any type of soil, even calcareous or poor. Soils that are too dry or too compact should be avoided. It fits well in a natural garden, alone or in a group, or in a free hedge.
Betula Pendula Purpurea does not require much maintenance. It is necessary to water regularly the first year after planting, then in the event of prolonged drought. It is also necessary to bring an organic fertilizer in the spring, every two or three years. Pruning is not essential, except to remove dead, diseased or troublesome branches. The best time to prune is summer or fall.
