Caucasian bladdernut (in 10 liter pot)
Staphylea Colchica
Description
Staphylea Colchica or Caucasian bladdernut is a very interesting and decorative shrub. It is native to the Caucasus and has deciduous, toothed and frank green leaves turning to ocher in autumn.
In spring, the Caucasian bladdernut develops abundant clusters of white flowers in drooping, very fragrant panicles. The flowers are very popular with bees and can be tasted in buds. They have a taste similar to capers and give off a sweet fragrance that perfumes the whole garden from April. The fruits of Staphylea Colchica are also very decorative. They appear in autumn and have a shape of swollen capsules with three compartments, which are reminiscent of lanterns. Inside these capsules are edible seeds, the size of a pea. Grilled, they are eaten like pistachios.
Staphylea Colchica grows quite quickly and can measure 3 meters in height in adulthood for an identical wingspan. The Caucasian bladdernutt is very robust and frost-resistant down to -15° or even -18 °C. It is very easy to grow and requires little care, only maintenance pruning. To prune Staphylea Colchica, it is advisable to do it in summer, after flowering. All you have to do is remove dead wood and branches going towards the center or crossing each other. It is important to balance the silhouette, but never prune large branches.
To plant the Caucasian bladdernut, it is advisable to dig a hole twice as large as the root ball of the shrub. It is important to loosen the soil and add well-rotted compost to promote the growth of the shrub. It is also recommended to water regularly the first two years after planting to ensure a good recovery of the shrub. Next, the Staphylea Colchica does not require a lot of water.
