Description
The Malus zumi Golden Hornet or Crab apple Golden Hornet blooms in spring, usually in April-May. Its melliferous flowers, dark pink in bud, are first of a delicate pale pink and whiten after total hatching. Very decorative, they are grouped in small bouquets. They are followed by bright yellow round fruits of 2.5 to 3 cm, carried by long stems. They persist on the tree until the heart of winter. The small apples of the Malus zumi Golden Hornet are edible and attract birds to the garden.
The Malus zumi Golden Hornet is a small tree with a compact, rounded port, which reaches a height of about 4 to 5 m for a spread of 4 m. Its leaves take on a pretty orange-yellow colour in the fall. The Crab apple Golden Hornet is very resistant and withstands negative temperatures down to -28 °C. This variety is very resistant to diseases and insects. It is also very easy to grow and requires little maintenance.
The Malus zumi Golden Hornet can be planted alone, in groups or in pots. It fits perfectly into country-style gardens as well as contemporary gardens. It is also very popular in small gardens, as it does not take up much space. The Crab apple Golden Hornet is best planted in sun to partial shade, in well-drained, moderately fertile soil.
