Description
Corylus avellana Aurea is a very decorative hazelnut tree with golden foliage. Appearing quite late, around mid-May, the large golden yellow leaves, which turn green in mid-summer, give it a luminous appearance that stands out from afar.
The Golden hazel tree melliferous flowering appears at the end of winter. From February to March, the 4 cm long yellow male catkins decorate the bare branches, while the female flowers appear from March to April, with small red flowers of 1 to 2 cm. Although partly self-fertile, Corylus avellana Aurea will produce a much larger crop if combined with other hazel trees. Its fruiting, beautiful 2 cm long white hazelnuts turn reddish-brown when ripe and can be harvested from late August to September.
The Golden hazel tree is a multi-stemmed shrub with a spreading and bushy habit, quite bushy and compact. It is fast-growing and will reach a maximum height of 4 m with the same spread. It is suitable for all types of soil, not too dry and well drained. It should be planted in an area that is not too sunny, in the shade or in semi-shade. It is hardy and can withstand very low temperatures down to -28 to -35 °C.
Corylus avellana Aurea can be pruned fairly short without any problem, but beware, its fruiting occurs on the previous year's wood. The advantage of pruning is that it will intensify the beautiful golden colour of this hazel.
