Description
Cornus alba Siberian Pearls, or Red-barked dogwood Siberian Pearls, is an all-season decorative shrub. It stands out for its many attractions, notably its magnificent purple autumn foliage, which contrasts with its white to bluish fruits and its bright red wood.
Cornus alba is native to northeast Asia, where it grows naturally in rainforests and riparian areas. It is a deciduous, vigorous and hardy shrub, which can withstand temperatures down to -35°C. Siberian Pearls grow to around 2 to 3 meters in height and 2 m in width, and form a dense, rounded clump, made up of many branches branching out from the ground.
The foliage of Cornus alba Siberian Pearls is one of its main assets. The leaves are oval to elliptical, acuminate, measuring 10 cm long. They are medium green above and bluish below. They offer a colourful spectacle in autumn, taking on shades of red mixed with green and then dark purple from mid-August. The foliage of Red-barked dogwood Siberian Pearls then falls in winter, revealing the mahogany red wood of the young shoots, which shine in the sun and contrast with the snow.
The flowering of Cornus alba Siberian Pearls is also remarkable. It takes place from May to June, and is composed of small yellowish white flowers, arranged in corymbs with flat and dense cymes, without bracts. The flowers are hermaphroditic and honey-producing, attracting pollinating insects. They are followed by decorative fruiting, which appears in the form of round, fleshy berries, approximately 1 cm in diameter. The fruits are white at first, then turn bluish as they ripen. They persist for a long time on the branches, and are appreciated by birds.
Cornus alba Siberian Pearls is an easy to grow and maintain shrub. It thrives in full sun or partial shade, in all fertile, fresh, but drained soil. It tolerates limestone and temporary drought well, but fears soils that are too dry or too compact. It is not prone to disease or susceptible to insect pests. Red-barked dogwood Siberian Pearls can be planted alone, in groups or as a free hedge, where it will add volume and colour. It can also be combined with other shrubs to play with the contrasts of coloured branches or foliage.
To encourage the growth and flowering of Cornus alba Siberian Pearls, it is advisable to provide it with an organic fertilizer in spring and autumn. You should also water the shrub regularly during hot, dry periods. To maintain a beautiful silhouette and stimulate the renewal of colourful shoots, the shrub must be pruned each year at the end of winter or at the beginning of spring. The branches can be cut back to 30 or 50 cm from the ground, or only remove a third of the oldest branches.
Cornus alba Siberian Pearls is therefore an attractive shrub in all seasons, which deserves a pride of place in the garden. It seduces with its abundant flowering, its changing foliage, its original fruiting and its flamboyant wood. Red-barked dogwood Siberian Pearls is easy to grow and adapts to many situations. It is an ideal shrub for creating contrast and dynamism in flowerbeds or hedges.
