Description
Kolkwitzia amabilis Pink Cloud or Beauty bush Pink Cloud : a cloud of small pink flowers.
The Kolkwitzia amabilis Pink Cloud, which in spring offers the enchanting spectacle of an avalanche of small, campanulate flowers of a fairly bright pink, deserves to be called a Beauty Bush. Its late spring flowering brightens up the garden with its tender colour, like a pink cloud, and its autumn foliage turns purple.
Beauty bush Pink Cloud is a shrub native to China. It can grow to between 2 and 3 metres in height and the same amount of width when fully grown. It has a very bushy, spreading habit and its arching branches bend under the weight of the flowers. It is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -30°C. Its abundant flowering, darker than the standard variety, is of a deep pink and lasts from May to June. The flowers, which are fragrant and melliferous, are shaped like small bells. The deciduous foliage takes on a beautiful purple hue in autumn. Grown alone, in a bed or in a hedge, its spectacular flowering and foliage enliven the garden.
The Kolkwitzia amabilis Pink Cloud appreciates any soil, rich and well drained. Place it in part shade or full sun, sheltered from the wind to protect its blooms. Once rooted, the shrub is drought resistant. The Beauty bush Pink Cloud is fast growing. It is not prone to pests or diseases. Flowering takes place on the previous year's wood. Prune once a year after flowering (in July) and thin out the centre.
