Corylus avellana Tonda Romana, delicious crunchy hazelnuts.

Of Italian origin, particularly widespread in Lazio (region north of Rome) this variety is widely used for the production of hazelnuts, the Corylus avellana Tonda Romana or Hazel tree Tonda Romana is an early and very productive variety which gives hazelnuts of very good quality.

A shrub with an erect habit of 5 to 7 m in height for the same spread, Corylus avellana Tonda Romana develops in several fine trunks. It blooms around February-March in the form of catkins. From the end of August to the end of September, very round fruits of about 1.4 cm to 2.5 cm appear, the fine shell of which splits easily. These large hazelnuts have a crunchy texture, an intense taste with a fine and persistent aroma. They can be eaten fresh or dried. They are widely used in pastry and confectionery. They are made into excellent spreads.

Self-fertile variety, It is however advisable to plant at least two subjects to promote a better yield (cross pollination). The first hazelnuts usually appear 3 to 4 years after planting. The Hazel tree Tonda Romana is not very demanding on the nature of the soil and resists negative temperatures of -20 to -30 ° C. Planted in hedges or in beds, it appreciates a rich and well-drained soil, located in the sun or in partial shade. It will delight you with its abundant production of delicious hazelnuts.
