New Swedish selection of Aronia with a more compact habit, Aronia melanocarpa Hugin or Black chokeberry Hugin, a very productive variety, is a deciduous shrub that has several advantages that are sure to seduce you, namely its generous fragrant white flowering, its edible black fruits and finally its flamboyant autumnal colors.

From a height of 1.20 m to 1.50 m for a spread of 0.60 m to 1 m, the Aronia melanocarpa Hugin is ideal for small spaces and is suitable for growing in pots. The green foliage throughout the summer takes on a beautiful colouring in orange and red tones in the fall.

In April-May, the Black chokeberry Hugin is covered with a myriad of small white flowers tinged with pink arranged in umbels, very honey-bearing. They are followed in September - October by small tart black berries, very rich in vitamin C, which delight birds. These fruits are eaten fresh, processed into juice, jams, pies or dried. They also serve as an accompaniment to a dish of meat or game. Once cooked, they have a sweet taste similar to that of blackcurrant.

Very hardy down to -20 ° C and resistant to diseases, Aronia melanocarpa Hugin is planted in the sun or in partial shade, in a soil preferably acid, well drained and humus. Count 1 plant per m², or space them 80 cm apart for row planting.

The Black Chokeberry Hugin can be associated with rhododendrons and azaleas, it is also an excellent hedge plant.
