Description
The Malus domestica Cwastresse Simple, more commonly called the Cwastresse Simple apple tree or Calville des Prairies, is an old variety of apple tree particularly appreciated by lovers of authentic fruits. This small fruit tree, of Walloon origin, seduces with the unique flavour of its apples.
The Cwastresse Simple apple tree, grafted on a low stem, is a fruit tree of moderate size. At maturity, it generally reaches a height of 3 to 4 m and spreads over 3 m. Its growth is relatively slow, which makes it an easy tree to integrate into a modest-sized garden.
Hardy and adaptable, the Malus domestica Cwastresse Simple tolerates harsh winters well and adapts to various types of soil. It particularly appreciates rich and well-drained soils. A sunny location is ideal to promote abundant fruiting and good colouring of the fruits.
In spring, the Cwastresse Simple apple tree is covered with delicately scented white flowers. The flowering, which occurs in April - May, attracts many pollinating insects, thus promoting the setting of the fruits.
The main pollinators are: Reinette Étoilée - Jonathan - Court-Pendu Rose - Belle Fleur Simple (Brabant) - Sabot d'Eijsden - Reinette Dubois - La Paix - Reinette de Wattripont
It pollinates the varieties: Reinette Étoilée - Belle Fleur double (Belle Fleur de France) - Jonathan - Reinette de Waleffe - Court-Pendu Rose - Belle Fleur Simple (Brabant) - Sabot d'Eijsden - Suntan - Reinette Dubois - Reinette de France.
The apples of the Cwastresse Simple are small in size and have a characteristic ribbed shape. Their skin, yellowish green in colour with slightly orange-red spots, is thin and smooth. The flesh, white, very juicy and firm, offers a very sweet and tangy flavour at the same time.
The apples are generally harvested from the second half of October. These fruits can be stored until March in a cold room, which allows them to be enjoyed throughout the fall and winter.
The planting of the Cwastresse Simple apple tree is preferably done in the fall or spring. It is important to choose a sunny location and to prepare the soil by adding compost.
Watering, especially in times of drought;
Mulching to keep the soil cool and limit the growth of weeds;
Annual fertilization in the spring with an organic fertilizer;
Pruning, essential to maintain a balanced tree and promote fruiting.
Apple tree pruning should be done in late winter or early spring. It consists of removing dead, diseased or poorly placed branches, as well as shortening fruit branches to promote the production of new shoots.
The Malus domestica Cwastresse Simple is a fruit tree that seduces with its rustic charm and the quality of its fruits. Its cultivation, relatively simple, is within everyone's reach. By integrating this apple tree into your garden, you will not only benefit from delicious apples, but also from a tree with pretty flowers to brighten up your garden.
