Description
The Agen Plum tree, also known as Prune d'Ente or by its Latin name Prunus domestica 'Agen', is a self-fertile fruit tree, prized for its abundance of succulent fruits and its robustness. Agen plums are distinguished by their oval shape and generous size of almost 4 cm in diameter, wrapped in a smooth skin that varies between a deep purple and a midnight blue, almost velvety to the touch. When ripe, their yellow to greenish flesh is firm and juicy, it reveals a mild and very sweet flavour, with subtle notes of cinnamon, particularly appreciated in jam or dried prunes. The harvest of Agen plums generally extends from late summer, from late August to September, a period when the fruits reach their peak in terms of taste and texture.
In spring, in April, on branches over a year old, the Agen Plum tree is adorned with delicate, honey-producing white flowers. Fruiting follows a few months later, transforming the floral promises into fleshy plums. This tree can reach a height of 3 to 4 meters, with a similar spread, giving it a rounded and balanced silhouette with an upright shape. Its hardiness is -29°C, it is resistant to climatic variations, although it prefers a sunny exposure for optimal development. The Agen Plum tree is very resistant to diseases.
For planting the Prunus domestica Agen, it is advisable to choose a well-drained location, as it does not appreciate waterlogged soils. A rich and deep soil will promote its growth and productivity. The ideal time to plant this tree is in autumn, allowing the roots to establish themselves during the winter. As for cultivation, regular watering during the first years and good mulching are recommended. Finally, in the garden, the Agen Plum tree finds its place both in isolation and in an orchard, where it contributes to biodiversity while offering an undeniable appeal for gourmets. It is a very good pollinator for all other varieties of plum trees (Prunus).
