Prunus cerasus Griotte de Montmorency, better known as Montmorency cherry tree, is an old variety of Tart Cherry. This fruit tree is native to France, it is prized for its tart and juicy cherries. The fruits, medium-sized, are bright red, characterized by their thin skin and firm, pink flesh, offering a balanced taste between acidity and sweetness that is perfectly distinguished in culinary preparations such as tarts and jams. They are also used to make delicious brandies. Morello cherries are generally harvested in June/July depending on the climate of the region, a period during which the fruits reach their optimum maturity and are full of flavours.
In terms of general description, the Montmorency cherry tree is a modest-sized tree, rarely exceeding 4 to 5 m in height by 3 m in spread, with a spreading habit that gives it a graceful silhouette. Its deciduous foliage is a glossy dark green, the white flowers bloom in abundance in spring, in April. This fruit tree is able to withstand temperatures down to -20°C, making it suitable for a wide variety of climates.
For planting, it is advisable to choose a sunny location in a well-drained soil to promote healthy growth. The Montmorency cherry tree is self-fertile, which means that it does not need an external pollinator to produce fruit, although the presence of other cherry trees can improve the quantity of fruit harvested.
