Description
Malus domestica Reinette Étoilée: an orchard treasure.
The Reinette Étoilée apple tree or Malus domestica Reinette Étoilée, is an old variety that seduces with its hardy character and its resistance to spring frosts thanks to its late flowering. This fruit tree, probably of Belgian origin from the beginning of the 19th century (1830 Maastricht, Liège or Saint-Trond), is a jewel of the pomological heritage and an undeniable asset for any garden or orchard.
The Reinette Étoilée is distinguished by its medium to large apples (60 to 70 mm), with smooth and shiny skin, a bright carmine red, decorated with golden star-shaped dots. Its white flesh, sometimes pink, is firm, very juicy and crunchy. The sweet and aromatic taste of these fruits is an invitation to taste them as soon as they are harvested in the second half of September, with possible conservation until December, or even January in the fridge. To be eaten fresh, in pies or compotes.
The height at maturity of this apple tree is approximately 4 meters for an identical spread, however, it can be trained on an espalier structure in order to make a productive hedge. Its mid-late flowering occurs from April to May. This fruit tree requires a pollinator to fruit effectively; varieties such as Belle Fleur Simple, Court-Pendu or Cwastresse Simple... can be good partners. It is itself a very good pollinator for late flowering varieties, such as the Belle fleur double or Reinette de France apple trees.
To grow the Reinette Étoilée apple tree, choose a sunny location and well-drained soil. Planting is ideally done between October and November.
Pruning: Perform annual maintenance pruning at the beginning of winter to promote good ventilation and sunlight for the branches. Remove dead and troublesome branches.
Watering: Maintain regular watering in the first few years, especially during dry periods after planting.
Fertilization: Add a suitable fertilizer at the beginning of spring to stimulate growth and fruiting.
Protection: Use nets to protect the fruit from birds and hormone traps against harmful insects.
Tip for a bountiful harvest : To obtain a generous harvest, ensure the presence of compatible pollinating varieties of your orchard. The diversity of varieties always promotes better pollination and, consequently, more abundant fruiting.
The Reinette Étoilée apple tree is an excellent choice for lovers of quality fruit and gardeners concerned about biodiversity. Its cultivation, although requiring attention and care, offers in return tasty fruits and an enriching experience for any passionate gardener.
This apple tree is grafted on a M111 rootstock (resistance to phytophthora and drought. Average vigor, easily adapts to very draining and stony soils)
