The Malus domestica Jacques Lebel or Jacques Lebel apple tree is a very old variety obtained by a nurseryman in 1825 in Amiens in France, Mr. Jacques Lebel. It is a very rustic, vigorous and productive fruit tree, which tolerates altitudes up to 900 meters well.

The fruits of the Jacques Lebel apple tree are spherical and flattened apples, of medium to large size (between 8 and 10 cm), with thin skin. They are greenish yellow in colour, very slightly streaked with carmine on the side exposed to the sun, with gray lenticels. Their flesh is white, tender, semi-crisp, very juicy, sweet and tangy. They are harvested from the end of August until mid-September and are kept until December (but their flesh then becomes floury). Excellent cooking apple, they are also delicious to bite into. They can be cooked into fritters, tarts or compotes. They have an authentic and pleasantly tangy flavor. The Jacques Lebel apple tree needs another apple tree to ensure pollination. Among the possible pollinating varieties, we can cite the Reine des Reinettes apple tree, Radoux, Gueule de mouton, President Roulin, or the ornamental apple trees which flower at the same time.

The Jacques Lebel apple tree is a tree with a spreading and drooping habit, which can reach 4 to 5 meters in height and 6 meters in spread. Its branches are solid and structured. Its leaves are oval, brownish green on top and greenish white on the underside, deeply toothed. Its flowering is mid-late, towards the end of April or the beginning of May. Its flowers are white to pink, grouped in bouquets. The Jacques Lebel apple tree is very resistant to diseases such as powdery mildew and canker, but is subject to scab. It tolerates all cold soils and climates well, as it resists down to -30°C.

Malus domestica Jacques Lebell is preferably planted in autumn or winter (until March), in fertile, fresh and well-drained soil. It appreciates sunny or slightly shaded situations. The Jacques Lebel apple tree must be watered regularly during the first years after planting, especially during periods of drought. Maintenance pruning of the Jacques Lebel apple tree is carried out every two years, in winter or at the beginning of spring, to eliminate dead branches, to ventilate the antlers and possibly keep it in a more moderate shape.

This Jacques Lebel apple tree is grafted onto a Bittenfelder apple rootstock giving apple trees with very good anchoring and adapting to all types of soil, withstanding humidity and drought well.
