Pomegranate Seedless
Punica granatum Seedless
Description
Punica granatum Seedless, or Pomegranate Seedless, is a bushy fruit shrub with a spread of 2 to 3 m and 3 to 3.50 m in height.
Flowering occurs between June and July. Simple and very bright orange, the flowers are particularly appreciated for their superb aspect of crumpled silk.
The fruit of Punica granatum Seedless is large and round and of a brownish colour punctuated with red when it matures between late August and October. As indicated by the cultivar name, the seeds are small and very tender. Thanks to a thick and rather tough skin, the pomegranate is resistant to extreme temperatures and can be stored long after picking. For optimal ripening, it needs sun and warmth in the off-season and regular watering in very dry weather.
The leaves of the Pomegranate Seedless are copper-green when the buds burst, then bright and shiny green in summer. From autumn, they display a beautiful golden sheen, turning to red and orange.
The Punica granatum Seedless is a very hardy shrub that adapts to any type of soil, with a preference for light and deep, stony and well-drained soils. It appreciates calcareous soils and tolerates acidity well. To top it all off, it resists the dry heat of summer as well as the cold of winter (down to -15° C).
As well isolated (imagine it alone in the middle of a lawn!) as in a hedge or a clump, the Pomegranate Seedless never leaves you indifferent. Combine it with other shrubs such as Arbutus unedo, oleander or Lagerstroemia and admire the picture!
If you opt for a container culture on a terrace or a balcony, remember to prune your pomegranate tree well and bring it regular fertilizer.
