Description
The Frantoio olive tree is a self-fertile olive tree native to Tuscany, it is mainly grown there for its excellent quality oil, very fruity, dark green with golden highlights.
Its white, melliferous flowering appears in May, followed by medium-sized, ovoid olives, to be harvested at the beginning of November. The Frantoio olive tree has a rapid fruit set, it is already productive after its 3ᵉ or 4ᵉ year. Like every self-fertile variety, cross-pollination with another plant greatly increases fruit production.
Culminating at a maximum of 3 to 4 m and 3 m spread, it has the particularity of having a slender, spreading habit and drooping branches.
The evergreen, leathery foliage of Olea Frantoio is dark green with a lighter underside. It can be pruned optionally, at the end of winter, on the branches that have fruited. Olive trees have smooth, gray bark that cracks with age and can live well over a hundred years.
This variety resists frost from -10 to -15 °C, however, it is advisable to put a wintering veil and a good mulch in the coldest regions. Planting is done in all deep and very well drained soils to avoid stagnant water at the roots. Exposure to the sun will guarantee a good harvest, it is very resistant to drought.
