Sweet chestnut Marigoule
Castanea sativa Marigoule
Description
Castanea sativa Marigoule, large, sweet and firm fruits.
The Castanea sativa Marigoule or Sweet chestnut Marigoule tree is a hybrid resulting from the crossing of a European chestnut tree and a Japanese chestnut tree. It is highly appreciated for its large, firm and sweet fruit, its good productivity and its resistance to disease.
Castanea sativa Marigoule is grafted on the sativa variety, self-fertile, it flowers in June-July in long hanging catkins. It then produces large, bright red-brown fruits with a sweet taste and firm flesh. These are harvested in September-October. Sweet chestnut Marigoule are eaten fresh, roasted, made into cream, jam or marron glacé. They keep very well in a dry place.
This very vigorous tree, with a broad and majestic habit, can reach a height of 12 to 20 m when fully grown (after 20 years) and spread out over 8 to 15 m. It is necessary to have a large space to plant it.
The Sweet chestnut Marigoule is quite demanding in terms of soil type. It appreciates acidic soil (heathland) that is fresh, rich, deep and well drained, exposed to the sun or partial shade. It fears limestone and excessive humidity. It is resistant to cold down to -15 °C and also to drought. It does not need to be pruned.
