Description
The majestic Castanea sativa Maraval or Sweet chestnut Maraval is a self-fertile fruit tree, it is distinguished by its large fruits of almost 4 cm and by its good productivity, it produces fruits from its young age (around 4 years). Resistant to drought and disease, this honey tree also attracts bees to the garden, which produce delicious honey.
A hybrid obtained in 1986 in the Ardèche by crossing a European chestnut tree, Castanea sativa, and a Japanese one, Castanea crénata, this Maraval chestnut tree is grafted onto the sativa variety.
This hardy tree, which can withstand temperatures of -15 to -20° C, is the king of large spaces: when fully grown, it reaches 12 to 20 metres in height and 8 to 15 metres in width. Its short, powerful trunk is combined with an upright habit and a broad, rounded crown. The Castanea sativa Maraval flowers in long catkins from June to July. Its flowers produce large triangular chestnuts with thin skin and shiny mahogany-brown bark that keep well. Ripe in September-October, these tender, sweet fruits can be enjoyed fresh, roasted or in pastry recipes.
At ease in the sun, or in semi-shade, the Sweet chestnut Maraval appreciates acidic soil or soil enriched with heather. In order for it to display its impressive wingspan, it should be planted in isolation, at least 5 metres from other plants.
