Description
Actinidia deliciosa Atlas, an excellent pollinator.
Native to Asia, Actinidia deliciosa Atlas or Kiwi Fruit Male Atlas is a vigorous male variety that does not bear fruit. It is an excellent pollinator and is used to pollinate nearby female varieties such as Hayward Kiwifruit. One plant can pollinate up to 5-7 females.
The fast-growing Actinidia deliciosa Atlas can reach a height of 6 m and a spread of 4 m. Flowering takes place from May to June. Beautiful, creamy-white, highly fragrant and nectariferous flowers open. The green, heart-shaped leaves are leathery and disappear in winter.
The Kiwi Fruit Male Atlas accepts all types of cool, well-drained soil in a sunny position. It is very resistant to drought and disease. Hardy, it tolerates cold temperatures down to -15° to-18°C. Voluble and climbing, it needs to be pruned. At the beginning of March, prune the branches that produced flowers the previous year to 2 or 3 eyes.
The Actinidia deliciosa Atlas is a vine that requires a solid support to grow, it can be trained along a fence, a trellis or a pergola.
