Description
Aronia mitschurinii Amit or Black chokeberry Amit with large fruits, is a fruit-bearing shrub of Russian origin, resulting from a cross between an Aronia melanocarpa Viking and a mountain-ash which gives Sorbaronia. This self-fertilising hybrid produces large, round, purplish-black fruits of 1 cm with a very sweet taste. This beautiful shrub can be placed in isolated, in an orchard or as a hedge, with its sublime deciduous foliage with leaves much larger than the Aronias in general of a green colour that turns flaming red in autumn.
The Black chokeberry Amit is hardy to -26°C and disease resistant, appreciates a shady spot and has no requirements as to the nature of the soil as long as it is slightly acidic, enriched with a little heather earth. An adult plant is between 2 and 3 metres high and spreads over 2 metres. Its bouquets of white, melliferous inflorescences appear in may-june, followed by a generous fruiting in bunches: its juicy, sweet fruits are harvested in August-September.
Aronia mitschurinii Amit is very easy to care for: abundant watering when planted, then moderate watering throughout the year and pruning to thicken the foliage and rejuvenate the plant. The Black chokeberry Amit has many assets: its edible fruits are full of beneficial properties (antioxidants, rich in pectin and vitamin C) as well as its aesthetic qualities and ease of cultivation.
