Bottlebrush Laevis
Callistemon Laevis
Description
Callistemon Laevis also named Bottlebrush Laevis is a shrub native to Australia, with evergreen foliage and a bushy habit round. This name of Bottlebrush is given to it for its particular bloom in the shape of a brush, this one consists of flower in terminal spikes of 7 to 8 cm by about 5 cm wide, bright red, melliferous and nectariferous, attracting insects foragers. The flowers follow one another non-stop from early May to October, bringing an exotic air to the garden. These last a long time once cut to make beautiful bouquets.
The evergreen foliage of Callistemon Laevis consists of small narrow leaves 5 cm by 1 cm wide. The young shoots are initially reddish when they appear, then turn light green.
Of rapid growth, the Bottlebrush Laevis will reach 1.80 m in height for a spread of 1.50 m. Moderately hardy, it tolerates negative temperatures between -6 and -8 °C, spray is not a problem for it. This shrub can be grown in a pot in a 50/50 mixture of potting soil and heather soil, this choice of culture is recommended outside the Mediterranean basin. It should be wintered in a cool place between +6 to +8 °C.
In the open ground, planting is done in acidic to neutral and well-drained soil, poor and stony soil suits it perfectly. The Callistemon Laevis appreciates regular watering, even if it supports dry soil for some time. It will be all the more floriferous if the soil remains cool in summer, a good mulch at its base will do the trick. An exposure to the sun and full south will guarantee a beautiful flowering, without this it will not bloom, because its flowers only appear in a mild climate. Adding citrus fertilizer every 3 weeks from April to the end of August will ensure optimal growth and lush flowering. Remove faded flowers as you go to encourage continued flowering. The seeds that succeed the flowers can remain in place for several years and during strong heat, they are released and germinate (also in the event of a fire). If you leave these seeds in place, it may seriously weaken the shrub.
In autumn, and to avoid this weakening, prune the branches that have flowered and are bearing fruit by 30 cm.
Combine Bottlebrush Laevis with other Mediterranean plants to create an exotic-looking garden. The perfect combination is with Caesalpinia, oleander...
