Description
Blue Passion flower is a climbing plant native to South America, it is the most cold-resistant Passionflower (down to -12 °C in adulthood). Its spectacular white flowering with a purple center is provided with a double crown of white filaments with pale blue to pale mauve tips, which appears in June and continues until frost. These 8 to 10 cm flowers, with a light citrus scent, much appreciated by foraging insects, are followed by orange fruits, the size of a small egg, they are edible, but do not have much flavour unlike those of the Passiflora Edulis which is rather the fruit passionflower.
The foliage of Passiflora caerulea is half evergreen in temperate regions of the Mediterranean. With us, it is obsolete. It is composed of leaves of about 8 cm, green and webbed. This fast-growing vine will climb up a support using tendrils, it will rise up to 7 m and grow up to 4 m wide. A pruning can be carried out during the summer to limit its expansion, otherwise you can prune it to 30 cm from the ground at the end of the season or at the beginning of spring.
Planting in the ground in our northern regions can be done by respecting a few points: it needs a very sunny exposure, facing south, all deep soils are suitable for it as long as it is very well drained, it will be necessary to mulch the foot especially in winter. The stems of the Blue Passion flower may disappear under heavy frost, but the stump will regain vigor and new twining stems will appear in the spring. However, if the plant is too young, it is better to grow it for some time in a pot to be able to keep it frost-free in a cool room in winter.
Vigorous and resistant to drought, it will suffice to water it 2 to 3 times a week in the middle of summer. In case of culture in pot, the watering must be more frequent, it will also be necessary in this case to fill the bottom of the pot with draining materials like balls of argex or others.
