Bird of Paradise Bush
Caesalpinia gilliesii
Description
Caesalpinia gilliesii, also called Bird of Paradise Bush, is a shrub native to South America, specifically Argentina and Paraguay. It owes this name to the resemblance of its flowers to the well-known small tropical bird.
Caesalpinia gilliesii is very popular for its magnificent 3 cm yellow flowers with long red stamens falling gracefully, which gives it a very elegant appearance, they bloom from the end of May to September in spikes of 15 to 20 cm. Nectariferous and melliferous, they are an important source of food for pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. The flowers are followed by 8 cm pods, flat and velvety, containing seeds with very rapid germination, barely a few days.
Fast-growing, Caesalpinia gilliesii is a shrub that reaches a height of 2 to 3 meters on a spread of 1.50 to 2 meters. Its bluish green foliage resembles that of Blue Jacaranda or silver wattle, with leaves finely cut into small leaflets of 15 to 20 cm for a very graceful look. This is deciduous in non-tropical countries.
Bird of Paradise Bush is a shrub well adapted to drought and poor soils. It prefers a sunny exposure and a culture sheltered from a wall. It withstands frost from -9 to -12 °C and recovers from the stump after a severe frost. In colder regions, it is recommended to grow this shrub in a pot. To guarantee a cool soil in summer, it is advisable to add mulch to its base. In winter, the soil must be kept very dry, in any case, it must be well drained.
Caesalpinia gilliesii is extremely interesting to grow in your garden. It will certainly bring an exotic touch with its magnificent yellow flowers and finely cut foliage. If the climatic conditions do not allow it in your garden, you can also grow it in a pot, in a well-draining substrate with a bottom of argex balls, This solution will allow you to shelter it in the winter in a cool, frost-free place, but be careful, limit watering.
A possible pruning after flowering will structure the Bird of Paradise Bush to keep its slender look and its pretty bushy habit.
