Description
Hedera canariensis Gloire de marengo, a bright foliage.
Hedera canariensis Gloire de marengo or Canary island ivy Gloire de Marengo is a very decorative ivy whose reddish spiky branches are covered with superb coloured foliage. Its large triangular leaves, about 9 cm in length, are green with silvery tones and creamy white shades. They highlight the red colour of their petioles and bring light all year round to semi-shaded areas of the garden. The leaves are slightly white when young. It is a climbing or creeping variety of ivy that can reach 5 to 7 m in height for the same spread, a hybrid between Hedera algeriensis (the type species) and Hedera canariensis.
Hedera canariensis Gloire de marengo blooms in September-October, with small, insignificant but honey-like greenish flowers, followed by decorative black berries. It can grow in all types of soil, even dry, chalky ones, as long as they are cool and well drained. It is best to place it in sunny but not hot conditions or in semi-shade. Ideal for a wall, fence or hedge, it adapts well to pot cultivation and is also happy indoors. It has a fairly good resistance to cold (down to -15°).
The Canary island ivy Gloire de Marengo will bring brightness to your interior and will elegantly dress up your facade and unsightly walls.
